The Autobiography of a Go-Go Dancer» is Paula Charles’s autobiography. Raised in the Caribbean, she moved to Switzerland in 1978 at the age of 21. She worked as a Go-Go dancer and started her career as a writer. In a foreign country where Paula faced racism, sexism, and exploitation by the ruling class, she found herself in situations that tested her self-worth and very existence. «Soul Stripping» recounts her experiences working in the Swiss nightlife and serves as a testament to Paula’s resistance and her struggles for a better life, love, and acceptance. Paula Charles has published several books and has, amongst other, been a columnist for «Fabrikzeitung». Her writings covered topics such as race, identity, and social justice, known for her incisive critiques and passionate calls for change. Besides her writing, Paula Charles has long fought as an activist for the rights and recognition of marginalized groups in Switzerland. She lives and works in Zurich. «Soul Stripping» was first published in 1995 by Limmat Verlag under the Title «Go, Josephine, go». This year, Paula Charles has reissued the book as a self-published edition. She is celebrating this second release at Rote Fabrik with a reading of her book, followed by an Apéro.
