With the London duo KIIŌTŌ, we couldn't resist, because the songs on their new album "Black Salt" possess an introspective elegance that enchants us. It's wonderful how familiar strands of pop music are woven here in such a refreshing way with film noir, folk, trip-hop, jazz and chamber music. In Lou Rhodes' voice (familiar to some of us from her time with the British trip-hop band Lamb), there resonates the captivating timbre of longing; around it, Rohan Heath (himself a veteran of the nineties UK club scene) builds a delicate framework of piano, Rhodes, jazz drums, soul guitar and double bass. Both had turned their backs on music for many years—Lou wrote lyrics, Rohan studied business. In the end, it was a shared jam session on the piano in Lou's kitchen that got the Kiiōtō project off the ground. Lou mentioned in an interview that "Black Salt" is the result of tensions, conflicts and self-reflection. The fact that such beautiful music emerged from this should fill us with hope.
