Despite repression, intimidation and persecution, they resist injustice and defend their fundamental rights. What motivates people to become active under difficult conditions? What strategies and networks help them do so? And what role does international solidarity play in their work? This panel explores various forms of civil society resistance and shows how people worldwide are countering authoritarian developments. Our guests include Fida Hammami (Research and Advocacy Advisor at Amnesty International Tunisia and daughter of persecuted human rights lawyer Ayachi Hammami), journalist and activist Lukas Žalalis (representing the Russian liberal-democratic youth movement Vesna) and journalist Daniel Binswanger. Together they discuss the causes of democratic erosion, strategies of resistance and the importance of networks and solidarity. The discussion will be moderated by Natalie Wenger of Amnesty International Switzerland. This event takes place as part of the Amnesty Letter-Writing Marathon. Through letters, petitions and messages of solidarity, Amnesty International supports people every year who are persecuted for their work in defence of human rights.
