Photos document the daily lives of refugees working as seasonal laborers under slave-like conditions on orange plantations in Calabria. Many boat refugees who arrive in Europe via Lampedusa end up as seasonal workers on orange plantations in Calabria. The starvation wages bring shocking living conditions: workers must live in slums made of cardboard and plastic sheets on the city's outskirts or in tent camps. The capacity of these camps is insufficient and hygiene conditions are disastrous. In summer, when there is no work, many of them go hungry. The photo exhibition Bitter Oranges is the result of several years of research in which Prof. Dr. habil. Gilles Reckinger, accompanied by changing project collaborators, regularly visited the orange workers of Rosarno. He had the workers themselves document their living situations using digital cameras and smartphones. In addition to these photographs, photographs, film and audio documents by the researcher are on display. The aim of the exhibition is to make the slave-like living conditions of the workers known to a broad public. At the same time, it presents in an easily understandable way the structural conditions of their life circumstances between European migration policy, price pressure in food production and extreme precariousness at the lower ranks of the working community.
